License required for riding a motorscooter in Colorado

I don't know why but people still ask if you need a drivers license to operate a scooter including 49cc scooters in the state of Colorado.

The answer is most definitely - YES. Has been for the past 30 years. If it's a motorized vehicle that wants to operate on a public Colorado roadway - you need a drivers license - period! If you have a scooter that is above 50cc, you'll need a motorcycle endorsement on that drivers license.

All scooters in Colorado now require liability insurance. That law came into effect a few years ago.

A quick rundown that I wrote up a few years ago can help Impending Changes to Colorado Scooter Law. Check the references if you need more details.

Misleading Colorado Craigslist scooter advertisements regarding license requirements

Some of the current Denver and Boulder Craigslist scooter advertisements look like slow motion disasters waiting to happen. A number of private Colorado scooter sellers are claiming that 50cc and under scooters don't require a drivers license. WRONG!

Anyone who plans on driving any scooter on a Colorado public roadway needs a drivers license and liability insurance. A 50cc scooter operator in Colorado just doesn't need a motorcycle endorsement. A motorcycle endorsement is added to the current drivers license.

If you see an advertisement for a scooter in Colorado claiming that no drivers license is required, run away from the seller. They have no idea what they are talking about. They are probably trying to unload some piece of mainland chinese scooter crap too.

With the price of gasoline going up, more people are checking out scooters again. Just don't be suckered by people claiming "No drivers license required in Colorado" for scooters. That just isn't true.

Some current examples of misleading ads -
